What we found
257 Brooklyn Avenue had two related issues: the stoop had reached a point where surface treatment alone would not hold (the wear had progressed into the stone body), and the cornice had failed to a degree that re-creating sections, rather than patching, was the right approach.
The owner wanted to do both at once. Given the scaffolding overhead, that was the right call economically as well as architecturally.
The work
Stoop work followed our standard restoration sequence — strip, address water entry at the base, patch and recarve where needed, recoat with color-matched finish, prep ironwork. Cornice work involved fabricating new sections to match the original profile (LPC approved a sample first), removing the failed sections, installing the new components, and finishing in approved color.
The result
Stoop restored with the geometry of the original. New cornice in place that matches the rest of the historic streetscape. LPC inspectors signed off cleanly. The building looks complete again.
